Life as an only child

For the past few days Rebecca experienced life as an only child while Drew was on his trip to Chicago. (more about Drew in another post.) Not really sure if she enjoyed being by herself. But my house was a lot quieter. Rebecca and I ventured to library time and she really enjoys singing songs. Then for another outing we had lunch at Chick-fil-a (ok, so maybe that was more of a treat for me). The first morning she woke up, she asked where Drew was and didn't believe he wasn't there until I showed her his bed was empty. She usually watches T.V. in the mornings sitting in the rocking chair with Drew, but instead wanted to be with me. After we told her where Drew was, when asked, she would say Cahgo. It was nice to get a chance to focus just on her for a change. But I knew she missed her brother. (as did Brett and myself)
She is talking more and more everyday, usually 3 word phrases. I hear a lot "Do it, mom" which means "I can do it myself, leave me alone." Also when put down for a nap she tells me, "Not sleepy mom." Of course, she will be out in a few minutes. She still loves her milk, pacifier (one day I guess she will give it up), lovie (her bunny), and her blanket. She will throw things and fold her arms when she doesn't get her way (ugh terrible twos), but mostly is my wonderful, precious little girl. We are so blessed.

But after reading Auny's blog about her dreams, it is clear to see that God was in control.

Last week

I broke down and bought a Zoo membership thinking that we (Kelly, myself, and the kids) would be able to go some during the summer and get our moneys worth. I know that Houston has HOT summers, but thought that if we went right when it opened and stayed a couple of hours we would be hot, but that's life. However, with the temps being around 100 everyday, it has been to miserable to go. But last Monday, the temperature had dropped back to the "cool" lower 90's so I thought "here is our chance". We went, and while it was hot, it wasn't too bad. At times a breeze even blew through. I guess the animals noticed a change too. We saw the most "action" that I had ever seen. We also took the kids on the train ride.

On Friday, my friend, Michele, and I met to play with the kids (she has 2 precious girls) at Discovery Green. I hadn't been down there and was excited to go and see it. She knew about a Gymboree class that is there on Fridays so we took the kids. Afterwards we let the kids play in the water fountains and then had a picnic.

This week we participated in Second Baptist's Vacation Bible School. This was Drew's first time to be old enough to go. He had the best time. I worked in his classroom and it was so much fun to be with him and see him interact with friends and enjoy himself so much.

The theme was Superheroes and there was a "Big Show" that we went to each day. The bad pirates were trying to find the source of the Superheroes power to steal, but we learned our power comes from God and is available to everyone. We learned we have the Power to Choose God, the Power to Believe in God, the Power to Trust God, the Power to Obey God, and the Power to Tell Others about God. Fun songs were sung everyday and I got a copy of the CD and Drew can't hear it enough. It has finally bumped the Star Wars CD out of the nighttime routine as the CD that he listens to first when he goes to sleep.

The children could have their picture taken with the Superheroes on Friday. The lines were long, I was tired and Becca wouldn't wait patiently for too long, so I told Drew he could pick ONE Superhero to get his picture with. He chose one the GIRL Superheroes. Wonder why???

For the preschoolers, they also went to a second "show". There was more fun songs and the daily Bible lesson was taught by Super Spy and Super Sweet. Drew loved going to this show and seeing Super Sweet so he was thrilled when we saw her on Friday and asked to get a picture.

Second Baptist may be a very large church, but one of the great benefits is so they provide so much fun for kids.

Fun with Friends

Last Saturday we went to the Stinson's house for food and fun with Brett's old roommates from his single days. The cast of characters included Les and Rachel have 2 kids, Trey and Amanda; Jared and Becky have 2 kids, Will and Luke; Rett and Kristy. Amanda is the newest member of the group and she is a precious baby. She looks so much like her big brother. Sorry Rae, we didn't get any pictures of her. It was such a nice night to see friends and catch up. Hope it won't be so long before we all get together again.

Last Thursday was Kelly's birthday. I will respect the elderly and not reveal her real age. We looked up some interesting facts about the day she was born. Well, I know they will be interesting to her.

Famous people who share her b'day: OJ Simpson (aren' t we all jealous??), Jimmy Smits (LA Law), Tom Hanks, Kelly McGillis, Courtney Love, Fred Savage, and (Kelly, did you know Scott Grimes from Party of Five, has your exact birthday???).

On her actual day of birth the Cardinals beat the Astros 9 to 5 (interesting to Bob, do you remember that game??)

Popular t.v. shows included The Partridge Family, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Gunsmoke, The Flip Wilson Show, Hawaii Five-0, and of course The Brady Bunch.

Food prices: Medium Eggs 25 cents per dozen, Potatoes Chips 89 cents 24 oz bag, Tomatoes 19 cents per pound, Campbells Tomato Soup 10 cents. These food prices really show how times have changed. Who wouldn't love to get some tomatoes for $.19 a pound??

On Thursday, my friend, Natalie invited us over to her house to swim in her beautiful pool. She has a precious little girl, Marielle, and Becca loved looking at "the baby". Drew had a great time playing with our other friend's (Danna) 2 little boys. Natalie and Danna are my friends from my Single Life days at church. They were great encouragers while I was single, great listeners in my early married days, and good advice givers while our kids are little. Ladies, as always I have so much fun visiting with you and am blessed that you are in my life.

Fireworks Day...

Drew's name for the 4th of July. This is my favorite holiday. Just fun, family, and fireworks. I spent some of the day trying to watch The Revolution on the History Channel (a documentary on the revolutionary war. I also love history). Hard to pay full attention when little kids are around and one keeps wanting to see Dark Vader (a Star Wars marathon was also on). Then we went to our church's patriotic service, then dinner, and then fireworks. Rebecca was a little restless and wasn't too interested in the fireworks. If she wants to hang out around us that will need to change!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July. We are so fortunate to live in a great country, where we can believe in a God who loves us so much that He sent His son to die for us and our sins. That is truly the greatest Freedom of all.
